WORLD DAY FOR SAFETY AND HEALTH AT WORK: OSHAssociation, MIN OF LABOUR AND EMPLOYMENT, OTHERS PARTICIPATE IN ADVOCACY RALLY

To commemorate the Annual World Day for Safety and Health at Work, the Occupational Safety and Health and Safety Association – Nigeria Region in collaboration with the International Labour Organisation (ILO), the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment alongside other top stakeholders hosted a Safety advocacy rally to Kugbo Furniture Market, Abuja on Wednesday, April 27, 2022.
The Safety Sensitization rally brought together stakeholders from Ministries, Departments and Agencies of Governments, The Federal Fire Service, The Federal Road Safety Commission, top security and Safety agencies, the concerned private sector and residents of the Kugbo Market community.

Speaking on the Theme: Act together to build a positive safety and health culture, the Director of OSH, Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, Mrs Adogu Nneka Lauretta stated that there was a dire need to create extensive safety awareness and advocacy across all sectors of the economy.
She explained that the Kugbo Furniture Market was selected in response to the series of Fire outbreaks that have been consistently reported adding that the rally was to sensitise the residents and market people on the need for safety and how to improve their safety culture to avoid subsequent fire disasters.

Some of the traders at the market who spoke with the safety view correspondent noted that as safety aware individuals, they have purchased fire extinguishers for their stalls adding that it will be great, adding that there was a need for a routine Fire Drill for the traders to orientate the community on how to use Fire Extinguishers.
“ We have a fire extinguisher in this shop, but the truth is that I don’t know how to use it… I’m appealing to the Federal Fire Service to look into conducting Fire Drills for traders as it will go a long way to safeguard lives and property” Mr Adurou said.

The annual World Day for Safety and Health at Work on 28 April promotes the prevention of occupational accidents and diseases globally. The World Day for Safety and Health at Work 2022 focuses on enhancing social dialogue towards a culture of safety and health. Through effective social dialogue, governments and social partners actively participate in all phases of OSH decision-making processes.
At the workplace level, a strong OSH culture is one in which the right to a safe and healthy working environment is valued and promoted by both management and workers. As we continue to live through a global health crisis and face ongoing OSH risks in the world of work, we must continue to move toward building a strong safety and health culture at all levels.
