THE RECTOR OF FEDERAL POLYTECHNIC NEKEDE AND OTHER PRINCIPAL OFFICERS BAG OSHAssociation UK FELLOWSHIP, PLEDGE THEIR COMMITMENT TOWARDS PROMOTING SAFETY IN THE EDUCATIONAL SECTOR

Occupational Safety and Health Association United Kingdom (OSHAssociation UK) as an international professional safety institution with regional presence in Nigeria for over a decade is committed towards the internalization of safety and health culture among Nigerians. The association has so far established a wide reach in Nigeria with members and trainees across different sectors of the economy, such as maritime, aviation, civil engineering, transportation, mining, industries, construction, education amongst others.

OSHAssociation extended its Fellowship Membership to the Rector of Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Owerri, Rev. Engr. Dr. Michael C. Arimanwa alongside the Principal Officers of the Polytechnic. The investiture of the OSHAssociation UK Fellowship was as a result of their commitment and passion towards promoting safety culture and their attainment of a reputation for the Polytechnic as the ‘Cleanest Polytechnic’ in Nigeria.

Rev. Dr. Arimanwa in an elaborate occasion was decorated with his Principal Officers during the Fellowship Investiture event, organized by the Polytechnic community at the school auditorium.

Speaking on behalf of the Management and Students of the highest-rated Polytechnic in Nigeria, Rev. Dr. Arimanwa specially welcomed the Imo State Governor, the Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodinma ably represented by his Special Adviser on Public Safety, Rt. Hon. Prince Ugochukwu Nzekwe, Government functionaries, Traditional Rulers, Opinion leaders, Safety officers, staff and students. He further appreciated the good gesture of OSHAssociation, and their notable effort in promoting safety in Nigeria and in particular, the Federal Polytechnic Nekede.

The Rector, represented by the Deputy Rector (Administration), Dr. Mrs. Anthonia Nneka Nwosu advised the audience present to equip themselves with proper health and safety knowledge, which will boost productivity and efficiency in their various occupations. Noting that occupational safety should be paramount in the day-to-day work life and activities of everyone, Dr. Mrs. Nwosu, further advised the special guests to greatly utilize the awareness accruing from the occasion in their personal lives. She noted that occupational safety practice has become necessary in the 21st century, to prevent unnecessary death, injuries and destruction of the environment.

The Polytechnic leader pledged to promote safety at all levels, especially among staff and students of the institution. To match his words with action, a safety training centre was provided to OSHAssociation UK – Nigeria Region to encourage the dissemination of Occupational Safety and Health knowledge and awareness for the benefit of the students and the general public, with the aim of increasing safety consciousness among individuals in the state.

The Regional President of OSHAssociation UK Nigeria Region, Dr. Dalhatu Mohammed represented by Professor Nwankwo Azubuike, charged the Fellowship investees to embrace safety as a major factor for sustainable development, especially in the educational sector.

In addition, the Regional Administrator, Engr. Emmanuel Uwalaka during his speech, appreciated the Management of the Federal Polytecnic Nekede for the facilities provided for capacity building and promised to make it the best Occupational Safety and Health Training Centre in Imo State for effective training and transfer of skills on Health Safety, Security and Environment.
