Rivers Fire Incident: OSHAssociation Challenged Government Over Slow Action to Safety in Various Industries

In a shocking turn of events, the recent fire incident on the Eleme axis of the East-West Road in Rivers state has not only claimed lives and caused extensive damage but has also laid bare the government’s negligence in implementing crucial safety measures and monitoring techniques in various industries of the economy.

The incident has prompted the Occupational Safety and Health Association (OSHAssociation) Nigeria region to challenge the government’s lack of action regarding safety implementation to operators in various industries. The incident has raised concerns about the well-being of citizens and the urgent need for comprehensive safety action to put a stop to reoccurrence.

On the Eleme axis of the East-West Road, a catastrophic fire outbreak wreaked havoc, resulting in significant damage and loss of lives and properties worth Billions of naira. Reports indicate that at least 79 vehicles were destroyed, and tragically, the lives of several individuals were lost, with some victims burnt beyond recognition. The incident occurred when a truck collided with a fuel-laden tanker carrying highly flammable Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), leading to an inferno that spread rapidly.

In the aftermath of this horrific incident, the Association emphasises that the fire incident serves as a stark reminder of the critical importance of prioritising and enforcing safety regulations across all industries and operators.

The Regional President of the Association HRH Dr. Amb. Aderemi Olusegun urged the government at all levels to take immediate steps to address the gaps in safety protocols and ensure that industries adhere strictly to established safety standards. This includes involving safety professional bodies to assist in decision making, proper training of personnel, adequate emergency response plans to save lives in cases of emergency.

To restore public confidence and prevent future tragedies, the government must take heed of these challenges and respond with urgency. The swift implementation of safety measures, rigorous enforcement of regulations, and the allocation of adequate resources to relevant agencies are paramount. It is crucial that all industries prioritise the well-being and safety of their personnel and the public.

The Rivers State fire incident serves as a wake-up call for both the government, captain of industries, organisations and individual to reevaluate their safety measures and commitment to preventing such disasters in the future.

OSHAssociation urges for substantial action from the government to ensure that safety becomes an unwavering priority in all sectors of the economy and promised the government their commitment towards proactive safety awareness in various industries, states and local government area, to ensure Nigerians imbibe the safety consciousness in all their daily decision.

The Nigeria President further call on government to join OSHAssociation collaborative proactive measures to ensure safeguarding of lives, protecting communities and properties.
