House Committee on Safety Standards and Regulations, OSHAssociation, Other Stakeholders Stormed Lagos Major Industries on Safety Matters

In a concerted effort to promote safety standards and regulations in major industries, the House Committee on Safety Standards and Regulations with the support of Occupational Safety and Health Association (OSHAssociation) Nigeria Region and other stakeholders, recently embarked on Health and Safety Compliance Visit to key industrial sites in Lagos state. The delegation led by the Chairman of the Committee aimed to assess the implementation of safety measures and address any existing gaps in order to enhance workplace safety and protect the lives of workers.

The industries visited include prominent organisations such as the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Flour Mills of Nigeria, Africa, Tin CAN Island Container Terminal, OVH Energy, and MRS Holding Company Limited. These companies were specifically chosen due to their significant presence and influence within the industrial landscape in Nigeria.

During the visits, the House Committee members, the Regional President of OSHAssociation Nigeria Region, HRH, DR. AMB. Olusegun Aderemi, along with other representatives of the Association and other stakeholders, engaged in comprehensive discussions with the management teams of the respective organisations. They emphasised the importance of adhering to safety policies, implementing best practices, and ensuring the well-being of employees.

The delegation closely examined the existing safety measures in place, including; emergency response protocols, fire safety systems, occupational health programmes, and the provision of personal protective equipment (PPE). They also evaluated the companies’ compliance with relevant safety regulations and standards.

However, the delegation also identified areas where improvements could be made, concerns were raised regarding the need for enhanced training programmes, workplace hazard identification, regular safety audits, and the implementation/use of advanced safety technologies.

In response to the visit, the management teams of the visited industries expressed their gratitude for the initiative and pledged their commitment to continually improve safety measures in their workplaces. They acknowledged the importance of collaboration between industry stakeholders, and government agencies to ensure a safe working environment for all.

The House Committee on Safety Standards and Regulations, OSHAssociation, and other stakeholders assured the industries of their continued support in promoting safety awareness and facilitating the implementation of effective safety practices. They emphasised the significance of collective efforts in creating a culture of safety within the Nigerian industrial sector.
