THE PERMANENT SECRETARY OF THE FEDERAL MINISTRY OF WORKS AND HOUSING BABAGINDA HUSSAINI BAGS OSHAssociation UK FELLOW MEMBERSHIP

In line with the Occupational Safety and Health Association (OSHAssociation) global vision to ensure the integration of Occupational Safety and Heath best practices in public and private organisations, the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Works and Housing, Mr. Babangida Hussaini, was inducted as a Fellow of the Association; following his critical role in regulating the affairs of construction, engineering and building sectors in Nigeria.

The construction and building industry is one of the most critical hazardous environments that expose workers to danger and death if proactive safety measures are established.
OSHAssociation as one of the leading international professional bodies proffering solutions in the field of Health, Safety, Security and Environment, and with a global mandate to make Occupational Safety and Health an integral part of every sector, has contributed immensely in promoting quality health and safety knowledge and facilitating skills transfer among the workforce in Nigeria and beyond.

The Nigeria Regional President, Dr. (Amb.) Olusegun Aderemi, ably represented by the Chairman Council of Fellows Dr. Dalhatu Mohammed, noted that the Ministry of Works and Housing over the years, have been very supportive and cooperative with the Association in ensuring workers’ health and safety. While welcoming the Permanent Secretary on board, he also used the medium to appreciate the Ministry for their support to the Association activities in Nigeria.

The Permanent Secretary, Babaginda Hussaini in his remark, appreciated the Association for finding him worthy to be certified as a Fellow of the great OSHAssociation and pledged his commitment and unflinching support in ensuring the actualisation of the Association’s vision and mandate of promoting safety and health in Nigeria and the world at large.

On the other hand, the Regional Administrator, Engr. Emmanuel Uwalaka who joined other distinguished Fellows and Directors of the Ministry to felicitate with the newest Fellow of the Institute, during his presentation on the Association’s focus areas and the recently commissioned National Safety Advocacy Project by the Honourable Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire at the Association’s 10th International Conference 2020, further appealed to the Ministry to join force with the Association to ensure great result in ensuring that safety culture becomes the way of life in Nigeria.

He further used the opportunity to encourage other Ministries, Departments and Agencies of Government as well as private organization to key into the objectives of the National Safety Advocacy Project to ensure the safety of lives especially in this period of the second wave of Covid 19. “We have a lot to offer every organization who is interested in joining the movement”, Engr. Emmanuel said.

 

The investiture and induction ceremony took place in the conference room of the Permanent Secretary in the presence of few Fellows of the Association, and Directors of the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing, with strict adherence to COVID-19 safety protocols and regulations.

Federal Polytechnic Nekede Partners with OSHAssociation UK, Commissions Training Facilities for Safety (HSE) Training and Certification in Imo State

The Management of Federal Polytechnic Nekede, under the able leadership of Rev. Engr. Dr. Michael C. Arimanwa sealed a partnership with Occupational Safety and Health Association United Kingdom (OSHAssociation UK) – Nigeria region, by commissioning Modern Training Facilities for Safety (HSE) Training Centre for the benefit of people seeking knowledge and skills in Health, Safety, Security & Environment (HSSE) in Imo State and beyond as OSHAssociation UK Authorised Training Centre. All related safety courses and programmes will be conducted in the centre in line with British Standards and guidelines.

The Rector maintained that the institution donated the Training Facilities for quality health and safety training and education due to the management’s priority in supporting the Imo State Government and Nigeria at large in promoting Occupational Safety and Health Education for the eradication of avoidable deaths, accidents and fatalities in various industries.

 

The Deputy Rector (Administration), Dr. Mrs. Anthonia Nneka Nwosu encouraged OSHAssociation UK Nigeria Region to fully utilise the Training Facilities to inculcate safety awareness and knowledge to the public especially the professionals from various sectors and students of the prestigious institution.

The Training Centre in FEDPOLYNEK was declared open by Mr. Chris Mitchell, Chairman, OSHAssociation Rivers State Chapter and was supported by Prof. Nwankwo from Abia State University Uturu who is the Chairman, OSHAssociation Abia State Chapter alongside other dignitaries.

Dr. Madu Augustine, the Chairman OSHAssociation Imo State Chapter assured the management of Federal Polytechnic Nekede, that OSHA Safety Training and Certification is the best that has happened in the institution, because the Centre will focus on ensuring FEDPOLYNEK students are equipped with safety knowledge and skills before launching them into various industries.

Dr. Madu who further stressed that the OSHA Authorised Centre is open for corporate organisations to send their employees, as well as for interested individuals and students of the institution, added that they are truly blessed to have the Centre right in their premises.

Engr. Emmanuel Uwalaka, the Regional Administrator of OSHAssociation UK Nigeria Region, appreciated the Rector and his Management for the bold step they took in leading the way forward in integrating Safety and Health knowledge and skills into the Educational sector. He promised to ensure that the Centre leads the way in Imo State, and for other institutions to emulate. He further assured delegates that OSHAssociation will continue to lead revolutionary impacts, ensuring safety integration in the public and private sectors of the economy.

THE RECTOR OF FEDERAL POLYTECHNIC NEKEDE AND OTHER PRINCIPAL OFFICERS BAG OSHAssociation UK FELLOWSHIP, PLEDGE THEIR COMMITMENT TOWARDS PROMOTING SAFETY IN THE EDUCATIONAL SECTOR

Occupational Safety and Health Association United Kingdom (OSHAssociation UK) as an international professional safety institution with regional presence in Nigeria for over a decade is committed towards the internalization of safety and health culture among Nigerians. The association has so far established a wide reach in Nigeria with members and trainees across different sectors of the economy, such as maritime, aviation, civil engineering, transportation, mining, industries, construction, education amongst others.

OSHAssociation extended its Fellowship Membership to the Rector of Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Owerri, Rev. Engr. Dr. Michael C. Arimanwa alongside the Principal Officers of the Polytechnic. The investiture of the OSHAssociation UK Fellowship was as a result of their commitment and passion towards promoting safety culture and their attainment of a reputation for the Polytechnic as the ‘Cleanest Polytechnic’ in Nigeria.

Rev. Dr. Arimanwa in an elaborate occasion was decorated with his Principal Officers during the Fellowship Investiture event, organized by the Polytechnic community at the school auditorium.

Speaking on behalf of the Management and Students of the highest-rated Polytechnic in Nigeria, Rev. Dr. Arimanwa specially welcomed the Imo State Governor, the Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodinma ably represented by his Special Adviser on Public Safety, Rt. Hon. Prince Ugochukwu Nzekwe, Government functionaries, Traditional Rulers, Opinion leaders, Safety officers, staff and students. He further appreciated the good gesture of OSHAssociation, and their notable effort in promoting safety in Nigeria and in particular, the Federal Polytechnic Nekede.

The Rector, represented by the Deputy Rector (Administration), Dr. Mrs. Anthonia Nneka Nwosu advised the audience present to equip themselves with proper health and safety knowledge, which will boost productivity and efficiency in their various occupations. Noting that occupational safety should be paramount in the day-to-day work life and activities of everyone, Dr. Mrs. Nwosu, further advised the special guests to greatly utilize the awareness accruing from the occasion in their personal lives. She noted that occupational safety practice has become necessary in the 21st century, to prevent unnecessary death, injuries and destruction of the environment.

The Polytechnic leader pledged to promote safety at all levels, especially among staff and students of the institution. To match his words with action, a safety training centre was provided to OSHAssociation UK – Nigeria Region to encourage the dissemination of Occupational Safety and Health knowledge and awareness for the benefit of the students and the general public, with the aim of increasing safety consciousness among individuals in the state.

The Regional President of OSHAssociation UK Nigeria Region, Dr. Dalhatu Mohammed represented by Professor Nwankwo Azubuike, charged the Fellowship investees to embrace safety as a major factor for sustainable development, especially in the educational sector.

In addition, the Regional Administrator, Engr. Emmanuel Uwalaka during his speech, appreciated the Management of the Federal Polytecnic Nekede for the facilities provided for capacity building and promised to make it the best Occupational Safety and Health Training Centre in Imo State for effective training and transfer of skills on Health Safety, Security and Environment.

Imo State Government Partners With OSHAssociation UK – Nigeria Region, Commissions OSHA Imo Liaison Office To Increase Safety Awareness in Imo State.

Occupational hazards and hazardous substances used at workplaces have been responsible for the increase rate of injuries, mortality and fatalities, which has directly contributed to lower GDP, poverty and criminality. Governments at different levels have huge responsibilities to ensure the safety of lives in various sectors of the economy through policies development and standard operating procedures for both public and private sectors.

The Shared Prosperity Government of Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodinma, The Executive Governor of Imo State, has reassured Imolites of his government’s commitment to their safety and health at workplaces, his passion for safety was made clear to Imolites through his Special Adviser on Public Safety Hon. Ugochukwu Nzekwe who commissioned an office apartment for Occupational Safety and Health Association United Kingdom (OSHAssociation – Nigeria Region) to ensure maximum safety awareness in the state. The office was declared open by the former General Manager Security NNPC, Barr. Sam Otobeze, supported by the Imo State Chapter Chairman of the Association, Dr. Madu Augustine, the country Regional Administrator Engr. Emmanuel Uwalaka and other dignitaries during the opening event of the Imo OSHA Liason Office at owerri Imo State.

The Special Adviser to the Governor, Hon. Ugochukwu Nzekwe in his speech stressed that the provision of the Liaison Office within the state is in line with the State Government mission in increasing safety awareness in the State and working closely with an international professional safety body like OSHAssociation, that has the capacity to support the government in accomplishing its mission of safety of lives in the state. He encouraged the management of OSHAssociation to make the best use of the facility and contribute towards the development of effective safety culture in the state. He maintained that the office’s focus should be in the area of occupational safety, health education, enlightenment and working in partnership with the Public Safety Office towards the progress and rapid development of the society.

The Regional Administrator, Engr. Emmanuel Uwalaka thanked the Imo State Government and appreciated the Special Adviser on his passion for safety and promised to make the best use of the facilities in ensuring safety of lives of Imolites through awareness creation, policy development and safe operating procedures for various sectors. He further stressed that safety in workplaces propels an increase in productivity and efficiency with zero time loss. He therefore encouraged the management team to be ambassadors of safety and health at all times.
