OSHAssociation Reacts to the Death of Tragic Elevator Accident that Claimed the Life of Nigerian Doctor During Housemanship

In a solemn response to the recent elevator accident that took place at General Hospital Odan on Lagos Island, which claimed the life of a young medical doctor named Dr Diaso Ovaere 2 weeks before completing her housemanship.

The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, August 1, 2023, has raised significant concerns about elevator safety and maintenance standards in various workplaces.

According to sources, Vwaere fell from the 10th level to the ground floor in the elevator she had taken to pick up her food from a dispatch rider. The severity of the incident was aggravated by a reported one-hour delay in removing her body and getting her to the emergency room, ultimately leading to her untimely death.

The hospital’s past knowledge of elevator concerns was one critical safety concern raised following this sad tragedy. Tweets from hospital employees revealed that complaints about the broken elevator had previously been addressed, but no meaningful steps had been done to solve the issue.

The OSHAssociation reacted aggressively following the incident that could have been averted if only safety measures, precautions, regular checkups, and maintenance had been done properly, and that it occurred as a result of negligence on the part of the management.

The Occupational Safety and Health Association (OSHAssociation), a renowned international organisation dedicated to promoting and ensuring workplace safety, emphasised the urgent need for a thorough investigation into the circumstances leading to the accident. They called on government agencies, relevant authorities and the public to raise massive safety awareness in preventing the loss of lives and properties and implementing necessary safety measures in compliance to preventing the occurrences of  workplace hazard and tragedies.

The organization also urged Nigerian to report any faulty equipment’s or unsafe practices that could result to the loss of lives and properties therefore promoting safety concerns and emphasizing the importance of collective Compliance in preventing accidents , preserving lives as well properties.

Federal Polytechnic Nekede Launches Occupational Safety and Health Association

Over the weekend, the Federal Polytechnic Nekede inaugurated the highly sought-after Occupational Safety and Health Association within the institution.

The event took place on Thursday, and it marked a significant milestone in the institution’s history, with Dr. ARIMANWA, the Rector, leading the way.

Prior to the launch, the polytechnic had signed a memorandum of understanding with the Occupational Safety and Health Association (OSHA) from the United Kingdom. This partnership established the polytechnic as a Center of Excellence for internationally certified Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) programs.

 

During the launch, the Rector, represented by Deputy Rector (Academic) C.C. Onyemenonu, expressed great joy at the collaboration between the Federal Polytechnic Nekede and OSHA UK. The Rector emphasized the institution’s commitment to providing comprehensive training on occupational safety, highlighting the management’s strong focus on safety issues.

Dr. A.C. Madu, the Centre Coordinator and Director of Linkages and Interventions, revealed the various OSHA UK HSE programs that would be offered at the polytechnic. These programs include courses on Fire and Safety Prevention, Environmental Impact Assessment, Hazard Identification and Control, OSH Professional, OSH Security and Safety, OSH Oil and Gas, and others. All the courses hold both local and international recognition, and graduates with the certificates have excellent prospects for employment and visas abroad.

The program was launched with a vibrant road-show, featuring enthusiastic members of the association, to formally announce the commencement of the OSHA program at the progressive Federal Polytechnic Nekede

Abba Moro Bags OSHAssociation UK Fellowship, Supports Passage of Occupational Safety, Health Bill in Nigeria

Senator Abba Moro reaffirmed his dedication to supporting initiatives aimed at enhancing occupational safety and health across public and private organizations in Nigeria.

He emphasized the alarming rate of fatalities and injuries resulting from industrial operations in the country due to insufficient laws and government sanctions. Senator Moro made this commitment upon receiving the title of Fellow of Occupational Safety and Health Association United Kingdom (OSHAssociation) at Excel London.

Given his background as a former Minister of Interior responsible for the Federal Fire Service and other Nigerian agencies, he recognizes the importance of fostering a proactive safety culture. He expressed satisfaction with OSHAssociation’s strong advocacy efforts in Nigeria and worldwide, believing that these endeavors would significantly reduce incident occurrences in the region.

In a significant development highlighting the collaboration between the regional administration, Dr. Emmanuel Uwalaka, who represents OSHAssociation Nigeria, and Prof. Adisa Bello, the esteemed Executive Registrar of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), engaged in a constructive and strategic discussion.
